Oxford Art Online offers access to easily searchable artistic resources. Through one gateway, users can search for recognized, regularly updated artistic references: 

  • Grove Dictionary of Art (formerly 34-volume Encyclopedia edited by Jane Turner, published by Macmillan Publishers, London 1996) – the most important online reference source in visual art from prehistory to the present. It contains more than 45 thousand articles, 21 ths. biographies, over 5 ths. images and half a million bibliographic citations that generated about 7,000 experts from 120 countries of the world.
  • Encyclopedia of Aesthetics – contains over 800 articles from renowned art historians. It focuses on aesthetics from its origins, from Plato to Heidegger, from Romanticism to Postmodernism, and from beauty to ugliness. Critically examines painting, sculpture, literature, music, theater, dance, television, film, and pop culture.
  • Oxford Companion to Western Art (ed. 2001) – one of the best reference materials for Western art studies (links to the largest museums, artists, epochs, styles and techniques, etc.).
  • Concise Oxford Dictionary of Art Termscontains over 1,800 terms, datings, and styles from visual art.
